Alonso gives Penders the nod ahead of Spurs clash
Xabi Alonso has been speaking ahead of Chelsea's Premier League meeting with Tottenham on Saturday evening, with goalkeeper Mike Penders emerging as a key talking point.
According to Football.London (Football.London), Alonso used his pre-match press conference to cover several topics, including an injury timeframe for Emi Martinez as well as his thoughts on Penders and the Spurs fixture, with the outlet publishing the full transcript of his remarks.
Chelsea's official club website, ChelseaFC.com (ChelseaFC.com), focuses specifically on the goalkeeping situation, reporting that Alonso believes Penders "is ready to show his qualities" - suggesting the young stopper could be handed an opportunity between the sticks.
The Sun (The Sun) adds colour to the story of Penders' development, detailing his journey "from 'clumsy' teen whose boots didn't fit to 'complete' Courtois-like star". The piece notes the 21-year-old "has big shoes to fill at Chelsea" but points out that, fittingly, he has "big feet" to go with the comparison to former Blues keeper Thibaut Courtois.
All three outlets agree that Penders is being talked up as ready for a chance at Chelsea, with Alonso's endorsement at the centre of the coverage. Football.London (Football.London) provides the broader context of the manager's press conference, while ChelseaFC.com (ChelseaFC.com) zeroes in on the direct quote about Penders being prepared to show his qualities. The Sun (The Sun) complements this with background on the player's rise through the ranks, reinforcing the sense that he is viewed as a goalkeeper of real promise rather than just a squad option.
With Martinez's injury timeframe also discussed by Alonso as per Football.London (Football.London), the goalkeeping picture at Chelsea appears to be shifting, and Penders looks set to be given the platform to impress against Tottenham this weekend.
